Supporting Marine Rescue Operations in Challenging Coastal Conditions
Earlier this year, volunteer medics from British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) responded to a demanding dolphin rescue operation in the Bay of Tuquoy off Westray, Orkney, after six common dolphins became stranded along the shoreline. The incident presented significant challenges for responders, with the dolphins located up to 800 metres apart across difficult coastal terrain. The scale of the stranding required a coordinated effort from trained medics working in physically demanding conditions to assess, monitor, and refloat the animals safely.
BDMLR is a specialist organisation dedicated to the rescue and welfare of marine wildlife around the UK, with volunteers frequently responding to incidents in remote and unpredictable environments. Operations such as this highlight the importance of reliable rescue equipment that can perform effectively during prolonged deployments in cold and challenging waters.
Throughout the response, BDMLR medics were equipped with Northern Diver Search & Rescue drysuits and personal flotation devices (PFDs), and personal protective equipment (ppe), helping provide the protection, comfort, and mobility required during the operation. Northern Diver SRE equipment is designed specifically for professional rescue teams operating in harsh environments, supporting responders during flood response, water rescue, marine incidents, and coastal operations where reliability is essential.
We are proud to support organisations like BDMLR and the dedicated volunteers carrying out vital marine rescue work across the UK coastline. For more information about Northern Diver Search & Rescue equipment, visit: ndiver-rescue.com
